Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal, year 2023
The Bolyai Institute of the University of Szeged is pleased to announce that
the Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal for the year 2023 has been awarded to
Albrecht Böttcher
Professor Emeritus (Technische Universität Chemnitz)
Albrecht Böttcher is an outstanding and leading researcher in various fields of operator theory, especially in those of singular integral operators and Toeplitz operators. His works have brought significant contributions to many subareas of those fields and their applications. An incomplete list of them is the following: approximation methods for solving operator equations; asymptotic theory of determinants and spectral characteristics of large Toeplitz matrices; factorizations of almost periodic matrix functions; the theory of Toeplitz operators with strongly oscillating symbols; lattice theory and Toeplitz determinants; the theory of algebras generated by two projections. It is difficult to overestimate the influence of the monographs written by him on the theory of Toeplitz operators. One of them, the book ”Carleson Curves, Muckenhoupt Weights, and Toeplitz Operators” (Birkhauser, Basel, 1997) coauthored with Yuri Karlovich, was awarded the Ferran Sunyer I Balaguer Prize of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.
Currently, Albrecht Böttcher is the author of 242 papers and 9 books. According to MathSciNet, there are over 2900 citations to his works by close to 1500 authors. He published two important papers in the latest two volumes of our journal that have already attracted very high attention.
The Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal was founded by Erzsébet Szőkefalvi-Nagy in memory of Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy, who served as the Editor-in-Chief of Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum from 1946 to 1981. The Medal, on which the engraving is made by the sculptor András Lapis, is awarded annually by the Bolyai Institute to honour a distinguished mathematician who has published significant, deep results in these Acta.
The official award ceremony will be held at 10:00 am on 10 November 2023 (Friday) in Bolyai Hall of the Bolyai Institute.
