Vuillard: The order of the day

Brilliant book

I highlight just some sentences from the book of Éric Vuillard:

`` Such obvious attempts at intimidation, such blunt maneuvers, often leave us speechless. We don’t dare utter a word. Something deep within us, someone way too polite and timid, answers in our stead, says the opposite of what should be said. ''

`` Great catastrophes often creep up on us in tiny steps. ''

`` Even the strictest, most serious, most old-world souls: they might not give in to the demands of justice, they might not yield to an insurgent populace, but they’ll always fold before a bluff. ''

`` We never fall twice into the same abyss. But we always fall the same way, in a mixture of ridicule and dread. ''
