Travel tips
Step 0: Planning
-
Google Maps is very good at planning trips within Hungary (all domestic public transportation timetables are integrated).
Step 1: Getting to Budapest
-
By air: Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD) is located 170 km north of Szeged.
-
By train: Most international trains to Budapest end at Budapest-Keleti Railway Station.
-
By bus: International buses to Budapest end at Budapest-Népliget Bus Station.
Step 2: Budapest to Szeged by train
-
Trains run every hour from Budapest-Nyugati Railway Station to Szeged (approximately 2.5 hours), and are called Napfény IC.
-
They have multiple stops in Budapest: Nyugati (hh:50), Zugló (hh:57), Kőbánya-Kispest ((hh+1):06), Ferihegy ((hh+1):12).
-
Purchase your train ticket in advance at https://jegy.mav.hu or from the blue and yellow ticket machines at the stations.
-
Pricing is complicated; it varies between 2399 Ft and 4400 Ft for the 2nd class, including seat reservation.
-
Seat reservation is recommended (you'll travel in a higher-quality compartment for a small additional cost).
-
Traveling in 1st class is just 1000 Ft extra, it is worth it.
-
Getting to one of the train stations from
**
the airport (BUD): take bus 200E to Ferihegy vasútállomás (runs
frequently, journey takes about 10 minutes). The hourly trains to
Szeged stop at Ferihegy vasútállomás.
**
Keleti Railway Station: take bus 5, 7, 7E, 8E, 110, 112, or 133E to
Zugló vasútállomás (runs almost every minute, journey takes about 5
minutes).
The
hourly trains to Szeged stop at Zugló vasútállomás.
**
Népliget Bus Station: take the underground M3 to Kőbánya-Kispest
(runs frequently, journey takes about 7 minutes).
The
hourly trains to Szeged stop at Kőbánya-Kispest.
-
Use Google Maps or the BudapestGO app for planning trips within Budapest.
-
A single ticket for local transportation in Budapest costs 500 Ft. You can purchase it either through the BudapestGO app or from a grey and purple ticket machine at the stops. (Note: a special ticket is required for bus 100E between the airport and downtown Budapest, costing 2500 Ft; however, you don't want to board bus 100E if you travel directly from the airport to Szeged.)
Step 3: Szeged
-
The public transportation system in Szeged is very reliable.
-
A 7-day pass costs 3600 Ft, and a prepaid single ride costs 470 Ft.
-
If your hotel is downtown, you'll be within walking distance of the conference venue.
