Graduation requirements

The doctoral program is 4-year long.

In the first two years, the main focus is on courses and regular consultations with the supervisor. This parts concludes with a comprehensive exam at the end of the 2nd year.

In the years 3 and 4 the doctorant takes courses and prepares scientific papers on his/her field of research. He/she resumes the results in a disseration which must be submitted after completing the 4th year.

The doctoral degree is awarded once the doctoral thesis has been successfully defended.

Admission procedure

Usually, the deadline for the application is in the middle of May every year. The precise date will be given at the main home page of the doctoral school.

The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program of the Hungarian Government offers a great possibility to study at Hungarian universities, including doctoral studies. The deadline for the application is usually in January.

Admission requirements

  • Fully completed MSc degree in mathematics
  • Proof of English proficiency (TELC B2, ECL B2, TOEFL- iBT:72, or RPDT – 72; Cambridge First Certificate at least “B”; IELTS - 5.5, LanguageCert B2 level)
  • Scanned transcripts of previous studies
  • Letters of recommendation from two professors, one of them should be the targeted scientific supervisor at the University of Szeged
  • Non-EU citizens only: recent medical certificate of satisfactory general health status (not older than 1 month)

Application procedure

  1. Submitting the online application form, uploading documents
  2. Paying application and/or entrance exam fees
  3. Evaluation of attached documents (in PDF format)
  4. Admission test (entrance exam) in the form of an online interview
    • Approx. 25 minutes
    • General questions on Mathematics, focusing on areas related to the intented research topic of the applicant

Frequently Asked Questions

When accessing the Hungarian Stipendium portal, I selected the University of Szeged but couldn’t find the department of Mathematics.

Select Natural Sciences then Doctoral School of Mathematics.

Could you provide information on the admission test that the University of Szeged would take?

The entrace exam (admission test) is organized by the Doctoral School of Mathematics. There’s no such module or syllabus. In due time, you will receive an information letter inviting for an online interview.

I obtained an English proficiency certificate from a prestigious university in my home country. Is that OK to prove my proficiency in English?

Only if your country is on this list. Otherwise you must have one of the language exams listed above.
