István Kiss: An introduction to modeling dynamical processes on networks

Abstract. By considering simple epidemic dynamics, I will introduce the mathematical framework for modeling disease propagation on networks/graphs. The model is formulated in terms of a continuous time Markov Chain (top down approach), as well as by staring from the level on individuals/nodes in the network (bottom up approach). For both cases, the high dimensionality of the resulting ODEs require some form of closure/reduction in order to arrive to a system that can be evaluated at least numerically. I will present exact closures for tree-like networks and will extend this concept to networks built using an arbitrary class of motifs or sub-networks. Moreover, I will show the link between the properties of nodes, from a network/graph perspective, and the possibility of deriving viable closures.
