Abstract. The algebras A and B are called categorically equivalent if there is a functor F that establishes equivalence between the varieties generated by A and B such that F(A) = B. In the rst part of the talk some general criteria for categorical equivalence are presented and discussed. In the second part some recent results on categorical equivalence of algebras belonging to the same classical variety (groups, semigroups, rings, lattices) are considered. In particular, some results of the current research of O. Koshik, T. Waldhauser and K. K on categorical equivalence of nite rings are exhibited.
