SUMMARY:Zorana Lužanin (University of Novi Sad): Has mathematics teaching caught up to twenty-first century?
LOCATION:Szeged, Aradi vértanúk tere 1., Riesz terem
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Abstract. Analytical and mathematical competencies have become increasingly
important in various professions. Students are in need of wider and deeper
mathematical and statistical knowledge. Has mathematical teaching responde
d to new demands?\nOur research shows that changes are minimal at all level
s of education. The first results of research conducted on the students at
University of Novi Sad in 2018 will be given.\nThe goal of the research was
to find out to what bachelor students understand quantitative data, how th
ey interpret it, and how much they are susceptible to common misconceptions
which could be avoided if concepts of probability and statistics are well
understood and properly applied. Students' self-reported knowledge in math
ematics and statistics, and their expectations of how much that knowledge w
ill be used in their professional and private life was evaluated as well.
