THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT of the Conference on UNIVERSAL ALGEBRA AND LATTICE THEORY Dedicated to the 70-th Birthday of Bela Csakany Szeged, July 22-26, 2002 email: algebra@server.math.u-szeged.hu WWW: http://www.math.u-szeged.hu/confer/algebra/2002/ Program Committee: J. Jezek, K. Kearnes, R. Poeschel, A. Romanowska, A. Szendrei, R. Willard **************************************************************
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM ------------------ The conference will start on July 22 (Monday) at 10 a.m. and will conclude on July 26 (Friday) early afternoon. We expect that most participants will arrive on July 21. The lectures will take place in the building of the Szeged Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Address: Somogyi utca 7. which is located in the center of Szeged, near the mathematics building of the university. The scientific program of the conference will consist of 50-minute invited lectures by J. Berman (University of Illinois at Chicago) P. Dehornoy (University of Caen) M. Goldstern (Vienna University of Technology) E. W. Kiss (Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest) M. Maroti (Vanderbilt University, Nashville) P. P. Palfy (Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest) I. G. Rosenberg (University of Montreal) and 20-minute contributed talks. A tentative schedule of talks will be posted on the home page of the conference soon after the deadline for abstracts (see next paragraph). If you intend to give a talk at the conference, but have not yet submitted your abstract, please submit your abstract immediately to AMCA, which can be reached from the conference home page at http://www.math.u-szeged.hu/confer/algebra/2002/ by clicking on `SUBMIT ABSTRACT'. The deadline for abstract submission is extended to July 7. Abstracts received in due time will be collected in a booklet and will be distributed among the participants of the conference upon arrival. The lecture halls that will be used during the conference are equipped with two overhead projectors. It is possible to use the blackboard too, but the blackboard space in the lecture halls is fairly limited. If you wish to use the overhead projectors, please bring along ready-made transparencies. In case you plan to use other equipment for your talk, we kindly ask you to inform us well in advance over email so that we can make the necessary preparations.
SOCIAL AND CULTURAL EVENTS -------------------------- All registered participants and accompanying persons are invited to the banquet of the conference which is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday (July 22). Wednesday afternoon (July 24) there will be an excursion to the National Historic Memorial Park near Opusztaszer (ca. 30 kms from Szeged). The excursion will include dinner.
REGISTRATION ------------ The registration fee is 60 US dollars for participants, and 30 US dollars for accompanying persons. For children under 6 years of age no registration fee is required. The registration fee is to be paid upon arrival. The fee covers organization costs (handouts, abstracts, etc.), tea/coffee during breaks, and includes also the costs of the banquet and the excursion to Opusztaszer. The time and location for registration are as follows: Sunday (July 21), 4:00 -- 10:00 p.m. Location: Council Hall of the University of Szeged Address: Dugonics ter 13 (Main building of the University) Monday (July 22), 9:00 -- 9:55 a.m. Location: Szeged Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (where the lectures take place) Address: Somogy utca 7. We kindly ask you to use one of the following currencies for paying the registration fee: HUF (Hungarian Forints), USD (US Dollars), or EUR (Euro). At present the exchange rates are: 1 USD ~ 240-250 HUF 1 EUR ~ 240-250 HUF In studens' hostels you will be asked to pay for your room upon arrival, in Hungarian Forints.
TRAVEL INFORMATION ------------------
Arrival ------- We assume that most participants will come to Szeged via Budapest. IF YOU COME BY CAR, you can reach Szeged on the National Highway no. 5 (Budapest--Szeged), or on the toll way M5 (Budapest--Kiskunfelegyhaza) which joins near Kiskunfelegyhaza with the National Highway no. 5. The cost of using the toll way is approx. 2700 HUF. If you come by car, please be aware of the fact that in most places in the center of Szeged you can park only with a pre-puchased parking ticket, parking time is often limited, and it is difficult to find parking space. IF YOU COME BY AIR OR BY TRAIN, we recommend that you take a train from Budapest to Szeged. All trains from Budapest to Szeged depart from Railway Station `Nyugati'. We recommend that you use one of the following direct trains: departure from arrival to Budapest `Nyugati' Szeged 6:05 8:58 7:05 IC 9:37 8:05 11:02 10:10 12:58 12:05 15:08 14:05 * 16:58 15:05 IC 17:37 16:05 19:08 17:55 20:57 19:05 IC 21:37 The trains marked with `IC' are InterCity trains. These trains require a supplementary ticket, in addition to an ordinary train ticket. (The supplementary ticket includes seat reservation. First class is non-smoking only.) The train marked with `*' does not run on Saturday.
How to reach Railway Station `Nyugati' -------------------------------------- IF YOU COME BY AIR, then the easiest way to get anywhere in Budapest -- including Railway Station `Nyugati' -- is to take the Airport Mini Bus. Tickets and information can be obtained at the designated counter in the baggage claim area or arrival area. Tickets cost approx. 2000 HUF per person to any destination in Budapest. A cheaper option is to take a city bus (called Airport bus). The bus stop is on the sidewalk where the building of Terminal 2/A adjoins the building of Terminal 2/B. The final stop of the bus is Railway Station `Kobanya-Kispest'. This is a small station where each of the above non-IC trains to Szeged stops, about 10-15 minutes after departure from `Nyugati'. From `Kobanya-Kispest' one can either take a non-IC train to Szeged, or take the subway (blue metro line: M3) to Railway Station `Nyugati' and take the train to Szeged from there. We recommend that you do not take a taxi from the airport. IF YOU COME BY TRAIN, then you will arrive in Budapest at one of the three major railway stations: `Keleti', `Deli' or `Nyugati'. If you arrive at `Keleti' or `Deli', then you can take the subway to `Nyugati': first take the red metro line (M or M2) to `Deak ter', and then the blue line (M3) to `Nyugati'. To travel by subway or bus or tram, you will need a pre-purchased ticket which can be bought near the entrance of each subway station. At the airport there are ticket machines, but they may require exact change. A separate single ticket is required for each leg of the trip. If you ride the metro and change lines, it is cheaper to buy a metro transfer ticket rather than use two single tickets.
Budapest --> Szeged airport bus at night ---------------------------------------- Hungarian Airlines MALEV runs an airport bus from Budapest to Szeged every night except Saturday. The bus departs from Ferihegy Airport, Terminal 2/A at 10:55 p.m. The fare is 6900 HUF. Tickets and information can be obtained at the MALEV counter in Terminal 2/A.
Getting around in Szeged ------------------------ The best way to get around in Szeged is by walking. The means of public transportation in town are trams, trolley buses and buses. The same ticket is valid for each of them. Tickets can be bought in advance (e.g. at the railway station) or from the driver, and have to be validated on board. [Warning: tickets bought in Budapest are not valid in Szeged, and vice versa.]
